The San Diego High Conflict Intervention Parent Education classes are different than most child custody parent education court classes. Other court programs emphasize coparenting methods to resolve the custody conflicts between parents. The focus of this program is to teach the parents how to parallel parent and how "not" to communicate with the other parent. Coparenting often fails, because it assumes that the parents can eventually get along. Our program assumes that with every interaction between the parents more anixety results creating less ability to agree of child sharing issues. If parents couldn't coparent while together, the gap now is wider between them since separatation and their anxiety level is increasing due to the ongoing court conflit.  

Our program focuses the parents away from their feelings of failure to communicate and then helps them redirect their anger at each other to learning how to end the fight instead of coparenting. The parents learn to parallel parent rather than coparent until they can calm down and protect the children. We have designed specific strategies to help the parents to let go of the fight and create closer relationships with the children.

We also teach parents  more effective methods to reduce the contact and communication between each other. The parents are even taught more effective methods to communicate with professionals who are involved with their child custody case.

There is a 12 week Parent Education Program designed for conflicting parents. This is often a Court-ordered Parenting Class right now for San Diego Court parents). The warring parents do not attend class on the same night. They alternate class attendance. The program will take 24 weeks to complete if both parents register to attend at the same time. (Currently this parenting program is not available except in   San Diego County at this time. Expansion to other Counties and States is currently being developed).  A second class is also offered, called the Mad About You-Anger Management Class, this is for parents who are mad at or about the other parent.  

The High Conflict Intervention Program also includes Training Programs for all Professionals (attorneys, counselors, mediators, evaluators...) involved in the Family Court System. Training for family therapists and psychologists working with children and families involved in custody conflicts is also available.
